Mrs. Pollifax: Spy is a quirky espionage thriller with an unlikely protagonist. After her children grow up, the widowed Mrs. Emily Pollifax (Rosalind Russel) comes up with a unique cure for empty nest syndrome. She strolls into the New Jersey office of the CIA and volunteers her services as a spy. Mason (James Wellman), a middle-level office drone, initially scoffs at her offer, but when his supervisor Carstairs (Dana Elcar) intercedes, Mrs. Pollifax has the job. Her assignment is to head to Mexico City disguised as a tourist and buy a Charles Dickens novel in the front window of bookstore at a specific day and time. Mrs. Pollifax does as ordered, but when the day and time comes and goes with no book in the display, she becomes unnerved. She decides to take matters into her own hands and winds up drugged and carted off to an Albanian prison for her efforts. Mrs. Pollifax must draw on every ounce of wile and charm to save herself before the Albanians put a permanent end to her adventure.moreless
