Murder in the First is a 1995 drama about a defense attorney's attempt to save a criminal from being executed. Henri Young (Kevin Bacon) has endured a difficult life. Destitute since childhood, he has resorted to a life of crime to make ends meet. Though his crimes are largely petty, Young is treated harshly by the penal system. After being left in solitary confinement for three years for a minor transgression, Young slowly begins to lose his mind. Upon his release, he snaps and kills a fellow prisoner in the cafeteria. Young is charged with first-degree murder and assigned a court-appointed attorney, James Stamphill (Christian Slater). Though the state believes they have an open-and-shut case against Young, Stamphill begins to poke holes in it, arguing that Young's actions were caused by the abuse he received at the legendary Alcatraz prison. Even though Young is a convicted criminal, Stamphill attempts to exonerate him by arguing that is the violent culture of Alcatraz that caused him to commit his crimes.
