Produced by Sam Raimi, Murder of a Cat is an offbeat detective comedy starring Fran Kranz, Nikki Reed, J.K. Simmons, Blythe Danner and Greg Kinnear. Clinton Moisey (Kranz) is an artisan action-figure designer who still lives in his mom's basement, and is, by all standards, a full-blown loser. But when he finds his beloved cat, Mouser, impaled with an arrow by a mysterious assassin, Clinton will stop at nothing to catch the criminal. Looking at the suspects, was it the gorgeous weed-dealing dame? The sinister Korean store clerk? Or the local celebrity with a dark secret? Relentlessly on the heels of the killer, Clinton will ultimately uncover a town-wide conspiracy far greater than he ever imagined on his quest to solve the mystery of The Murder of a Cat.

Metacritic Score

  • 60

    Village Voice Serena Donadoni

Murder of a Cat has an off-kilter charm, with Greene prizing humor over menace, and Clinton's maturity over plot resolution

  • 50

    New York Post Sara Stewart

Heavy on quirk and light on wit, first-time director Gillian Greene's comedy leans too heavily on the badly wigged Kranz.

  • 20

New York Daily News Joe Neumaier

This is a perfect example of the kind of indie movie J.K. Simmons will hopefully never have to do again if he wins an Oscar for "Whiplash."
