Murphy's Romance is a 1985 romantic comedy about the budding relationship between a wise, older man, Murphy Jones (James Garner), and a sweet, headstrong younger woman, Emma Moriarty (Sally Field). Emma moves to Eunice, a quaint Midwestern town, to rebuild her life after the breakup of her marriage. She moves into a rented ranch that she intends to turn into a training center for horses. The bank turns her down for a loan, however, and it looks like things will never go her way when Murphy buys a horse and boards it with Emma. Suddenly, the rest of the town follows Murphy's lead and Emma's business is flourishing as she and Murphy initiate a tentative relationship. Things get complicated when Emma's husband Jack Moriarity (Brian Kerwin) shows up, a friendly but lazy man who hopes to rekindle his relationship with Emma. Will Murphy be able to compete with a handsome young man like Jack? Murphy's Romance is directed by Martin Ritt, from a screenplay by Harriet Frank Jr. and Irving Ravetch.moreless
