My Brilliant Career is a 1979 Australian biography directed by Gillian Armstrong. In the film, Sybylla Melvyn (Judy Davis) is a woman growing up in the Victorian era in Australia. She has low self-esteem and feels she is very ugly and not worth anything to anyone. Her lifelong dream is to become a successful writer, but her family does not support her at all. Her family loses a lot of status over the years because her father is a terrible businessman and a drunk. When he has a debt he cannot pay monetarily, he sends his daughter to work for the lender as a maid. She does have an opportunity to marry a rich man, Harry Beecham (Sam Neill), but turns him down because she does not feel she is good enough for him. Through the adversaries she faces in her life, Sybylla grows into a very secure woman. Will Sybylla follow her dream and become a writer, or is she doomed to menial work for the rest of her life?moreless
