Released:
2000
Rating:
PG
My Dog Skip is a much loved 2000 family drama based on the popular book by Willie Morris and directed by Jay Russell (Ladder 49, Tuck Everlasting, The Water Horse). My Dog Skip is a poignant celebration of childhood, friendship, family, and most important, the unique relationship between a boy and his dog. The movie has some darker moments which may be difficult for children under the age of 8, but for others, it's well-worth viewing. The film stars Frankie Muniz (who found fame as the star of television's 'Malcolm in the Middle') as Willie, a kid growing up in the South during the early '40's. He has few friends, and so his mother buys him a cute, clever dog that helps make his life a lot easier and better. It's a film parents should watch with their children, which could provide some good discussion afterwards. Also starring Kevin Bacon in a warm, understated performance as Willie's father.
