My Favorite Year is a 1982 backstage comedy that returns to the wild days of live television. In 1954, The Comedy Cavalcade is the most popular show on television with King Kaiser (Joseph Bologna) as its eccentric and egotistical star. The producers hire movie star Alan Swann (Peter O'Toole), famous for swashbuckling adventures, for a guest spot but Kaiser vetoes the decision based on Swann's reputation as an unreliable and alcoholic performer. Junior writer Benjy Stone (Mark Linn-Baker), who has admired Swann since childhood, stands up for Swann and gets the task of watching over Swann with his job on the line. At first, Swann proves to be an amiable and fun assignment. He even helps Benjy woo his coworker, K.C. Downing (Jessica Harper) and impress his family by visiting during a Sunday dinner in Brooklyn. Then Swann discovers that the show is live, not taped, and has a meltdown and Benjy must find a way to get the star to the stage on time. Richard Benjamin ("Mermaids") directs this nostalgic and fun look back at the fifties and early television.moreless
