PG-13

My Life in Ruins is a romantic comedy film directed by Donald Petrie that centers on Georgia Ianakopolis, an out-of-job Greek-American Classics professor who works as a tour guide to misfit tourists around Greece. Her uptight, history oriented lectures often clashes with the tourists’ interests in purchasing the fake Greek pottery and the seemingly never-ending supply of ice cream. Her entertaining and frustrating set of tourists all seem to fall into some horrendous cliché with brash and egocentric Americans Kim and Big Al Sawchuck (Rachel Dratch and Harland Williams), haughty British Dr. Elizabeth Tullen, her trying husband Stewart, and their sullen daughter Caitlin (Caroline Goodall, Ian Ogilvy, Sophie Stuckey), the attractive women “giving up men” Lala and Lena (Maria Botto, Maria Adanez), and the oblivious collegiate Gator (Jareb Dauplaise). Though they drive her insane, Georgia slowly takes up the advice of the witty Irv (Richard Dreyfuss) and begins to enjoy the ride, even going so much as to begin a romance with the driver Poupi Kakas (Alexis Georgoulis) and to also start enacting revenge against the other tour guide, the belittling and mocking Nico (Alistair McGowan).

The New York Times Stephen Holden

Not likely to spur much tourism to Greece. The sights, though impressive, are not photographed interestingly, and the citizens of the host country are less than welcoming.

    Los Angeles Times

Doesn't skimp on the life lessons or instant transformations. But the movie primarily exists to give amiable Everywoman Vardalos the chance to regain her kefi.

    Feels like warmed-over souvlaki.
