My Man Godfrey is a classic 1936 screwball comedy with a silly heiress learning life lessons from a former hobo. During a playful scavenger hunt, New York socialite Irene Bullock (Carole Lombard) and her sister, Cornelia (Gail Patrick) need to find a "forgotten man" to complete their list. They find Godfrey (William Powell), a hobo living in a city dump, and think he fits the bill. When Cornelia offers him $5 to follow her back to the Waldorf hotel, he simply pushes her into the garbage, but the more sweet-natured Irene convinces him to let her win. By the time they arrive back at the party, Irene has developed a crush on Godfrey and convinces her parents, Alexander (Eugene Pallette) and Angelica (Alice Brady), to hire him as a family butler. The Bullock family does not realize that Godfrey is actually a Harvard-educated upper class man, who decided to leave that world behind. Gregory La Cava ("Stage Door") directs this fun and romantic tale that received six Oscar nominations.moreless
