My Side of the Mountain is a 1969 family adventure movie based on the novel by Jean Craighead George, directed by James B. Clark and starring Teddy Eccles as Sam Gribley, a precocious child who runs away to the mountains after receiving disappointing news. When Sam’s parents inform him that their family vacation has been canceled, meaning that he will not be able to do the algae experiments he had planned for that summer, Sam is very upset. He knows that he cannot complete the experiments at home, in New York City, so he decides to run off to the mountains alone. With only a penknife, a ball of cord, a flint and steel set, and the $40 that he saved from selling magazine subscriptions, Sam sets out to build a comfortable life for himself in the wild. The challenges of nature are great, especially for a litte boy. But then again, Sam is no ordinary boy. My Side of the Mountain won a 1970 Golden Laurel Award.moreless
