My Sister Eileen is a musical centered around two wide-eyed sisters who make every effort - and often cross lines - as they pursue their creative passions in the city of Manhattan. The film originated as a well regarded book written by Ruth McKenney. In 1955, Richard Quine and Blake Edwards adapted the script to screen where Betty Garrett and Janet Leigh star. Ruth Sherwood (Betty Garrett) and her sister Eileen (Janet Leigh) have always dreamed of leaving their quiet lives in Ohio for more culturally-stimulating lives in New York City. And one day, they do just that - they move into a narrow basement in an apartment in Manhattan. Eileen fulfills her dreams of becoming an actress by joining a local theater. A more reserved and perceptive Ruth lands a job working as a journalist - a job that proves to be more difficult than imagined. Suddenly, Ruth is asked to write a biographical piece on her sister and her various romances with men. Eileen is startled when she receives news of Ruth's new endeavor but the girls work out their differences despite how trying their situation is.moreless
