2004

NC-17
Mysterious Skin is a drama film that was released on May 6, 2004. The film is based on a book of the same name. Mysterious Skin is centered around two boys, Neil McCormick (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Brian Lackey (Brady Corbet), who are sexually abused by their baseball coach (Bill Sage). The movie shows the effect of the sexual abuse on both boys. Neil had shown signs of being homosexual as a young boy. Because of the sexual abuse, Neil becomes attracted to much older men and becomes sexually compulsive. As a teenager, he ends up getting involved in a life of crime. Brian reacts to the abuse in a different way; he blocks memories of the events, but starts to wet the bed and gets nose bleeds. When he reaches his teen years, he becomes withdrawn from others and realizes that he is asexual. Mysterious Skin shows the effects of what sexual abuse does to a person throughout their whole life.moreless

Rarely have I seen a film as intense as Mysterious Skin. It is one Gregg Araki's finest works. What a shame it was so overlooked! If you are an adult that gets into coming of age films, there are few superior. A realistic emotional rendering of the life of a young outcast who ends up being a male-hustler, and the connection between a naive, innocent who has worried about some "missing time" he has experienced. Buy this unrated, director's cut DVD, and turn someone else on the this magnificent film. Few will forget this cinematic experience.moreless
