Movie Summary

Director:
Dennis Dugan
Released:
2003
Rating:
PG-13

National Security is the satirical tale of a callous police reject, Earl (Martin Lawrence), and a recently fired Los Angeles police officer, Hank (Steve Zahn). The bad blood that results from previous events between the two men make for comedic gold as they are now forced to work with each other, as they both get jobs working mall security. Unsatisfied with his new position, Hank will do whatever it takes to put an end to a smuggling ring which plagues the mall. He strives to solve the case himself before the real cops in an attempt to prove his worth and get himself reinstated into his old job as a police officer. Nash (Eric Roberts), the kingpin behind the smuggling operation, uses his band of hired thugs to stay in business and elude Lt. Washington (Bill Duke) and Detective Frank McDuff (Colm Feore), the authorities that are assigned to work on this case. Will Earl and Hank be able to administer justice before these thugs are taken down by the real police?

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

A funny, raucous action comedy, effectively teams Martin Lawrence and Steve Zahn in a film that's both laugh out loud funny and surprisingly subtle.

  • 50

    Variety Joe Leydon

Comes off as a retro reprise of those slam-bang, buddy-buddy action-comedies that proliferated throughout the '80s in the wake of "48 HRS."

  • 10

The New York Times Dana Stevens

Lacks the wit to do anything new and instead recycles tired jokes and attitudes.

I have always liked Martin Lawrence as a comedian or actor and he does a great job at either one. Now with Steve Zahn, I have been watching his movies for the last few years and it seems like he has great character and he does great in his roles. Both also do great speaking roles as animals....
