The film is about the Australian outlaw Ned Kelly (Heath Ledger) and the gang he forms with his brother Dan Kelly (Laurence Kinland) and close friends Joe Byrne (Orlando Bloom) and Steve Hart (Philip Barantini). The Kelly Gang rampages through Australia during the late nineteenth century, robbing banks and constantly evading capture by the authorities. Their nemesis, Superintendent Francis Hare (Geoffrey Rush) pursues them across the country, but is constantly foiled in his attempts to capture the Kelly Gang because they have become so popular amongst the local residents.
