New World (Extended Cut)

Movie Summary

Director:
Terrence Malick
Released:
2006
Rating:
PG-13
The New World is a historical dramatic film directed by Terrence Malick that centers on the historical story of the initial founding of Jamestown, Virginia, including the relationship between the English Captain John Smith (Colin Farrell) and the Virginia Indian Chief's daughter, Pocahontas (Q'orianka Kilcher). Pocahontas and her tribe had initially watched from the shores as three English ships land on the Jamestown shores, bearing men sent by the crown to establish a colony there. The young girl struggles with her curiosity and her tribe's distrust of the new inhabitants. Despite being sentenced to death for mutinous mutterings, Captain John Smith is saved by Captain Christopher Newport (Christopher Plummer) and is sent up stream to make some semblance of a peace offering to the tribe, especially now that the Englishmen are unable to set up any success in the new world. As a relationship blossoms between Pocahontas and Smith, their lives are put on the line as the English refuse to leave and Pocahontas's father declares war on the intruders. The New World is beautiful in its blend of history and myth with a look at the effect the English had on a girl and her impact in the eyes of history.moreless
