Next of Kin is a 1989 crime drama directed by John Irvin. Truman Gates (Patrick Swayze) is a Chicago cop trying to help his younger brother Gerald (Bill Paxton) land a job in Chicago after Gerald loses his mining job. The Kentucky native convinces his brother to give Chicago a try, but is wracked with guilt when Gerald is gunned down by Joey Rosellini (Adam Baldwin), a member of the Chicago mob. Returning to his Appalachian hometown to bury Gerald, Truman is confronted by his sole surviving brother, Briar Gates (Liam Neeson). Briar is anxious to settle the score with the Chicago gangsters he holds responsible for his younger brother's death. Outraged when Truman declines to take part in a traditional mountain blood feud, Briar sets off for Chicago alone. Truman is desperate to solve his brother's murder before any more blood is shed and follows Briar to Chicago. With Briar on the warpath, it's up to Truman to save what's left of his family. Next of Kin features a truly all-star cast, with no less than six of the principal actors, including Ben Stiller, Helen Hunt and Michael J. Pollard, being Academy Award nominees or winners.
