Nightwatching is an intriguing and unusual historical drama about the celebrated Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn (Martin Freeman). Rembrandt is universally considered one of the greatest artistic geniuses of all time, and is unquestionably the world's most important Dutch painter. A brilliant portrait artist noted for his use of light, Rembrandt is pressured by his wife Saskia (Eva Birthistle) into painting a group portrait against his wishes. The subjects are called the Amsterdam Musketeer Militia, a group of men who - in spite of their name - are simply rich businessmen who enjoy pretending that they are soldiers. Wishing to please his wife, Rembrandt agrees to create the painting, but depicts the "militia" as a group of ugly, disorganized men. This interpretation affected Rembrandt in profound ways and significantly altered the trajectory of his career. Nightwatching is quite a treat for art enthusiasts, particularly those with an interest in portraiture and etching.
