Helen Ferguson (Barbara Stanwyck) is eight months pregnant when her boyfriend, Steve Morley (Lyle Bettger), dumps her without leaving anything for her or for their child. Uncertain of her future, she boards a train back home to San Francisco. While on her way, the train meets a fatal crash leaving many passengers dead. Upon rescue, her identity is mistaken as the pregnant wife of a rich man, Hugh Harkness (Richard Denning), who was also killed in the accident together with his seven months pregnant wife, Patrice Harkness (Phyllis Thaxter). Broke and desperate, she seizes the opportunity and assumes the role of the dead man's wife to the wealthy Harkness family. Eventually, Morley finds her place and threatens to blackmail her. She finds herself in a difficult situation between losing her new-found life which she never ever dreamed she would ever have or deal with the demands of her former boyfriend in order to save herself and her child's future.moreless
