An awkward teenager, Charles Cummings (Jon Cryer) has a passion for photography. One day, while snapping photographs of different landmarks in San Francisco, a young singer named Laura (Demi Moore) walks into his viewfinder. While developing his pictures, Charles is stunned by Laura's beauty and makes it his mission to find her. The search seems hopeless until Charles visits a bar with his brother Leonard (Peter Frechette) and sees Laura singing on stage. He is devastated to learn that Laura may soon lose her job and his compassion for her situation causes Laura to befriend the younger boy. Intent on helping Laura become successful, Charles has her picture and telephone number printed on taxi cabs all over San Francisco. His drastic actions have unexpected results for both Laura and Charles and will change their lives forever.
