No Time For Sergeants is a 1958 comedy starring Andy Griffith, Myron McCormick, and Don Knotts and based on the novel of the same name by Mac Hyman. Griffith plays Will Stockdale, a bumbling young man from a backwater town in Georgia. Will's father, knowing the boy wouldn't fare well in the armed forces, chooses to hide the draft notices the government sends their household. However, when Will is arrested for draft dodging and forced into the Air Force, his father's best intentions put the misfit kid in a world of trouble. Nick Adams plays Private Ben Whitledge, another dim-witted young man who joins forces with Will during their struggle to make it through boot camp and become pilots. Will is not without his virtues-he has incredible strength, and can drink any man under the table. However, his inability to learn basic tasks or command structure makes for a hilarious story as he tries to survive the military life. No Time For Sergeants is a classic American comedy, adapted from the play by Ira Levin and directed by Mervyn LeRoy.moreless
