Nobody's Child, based on a true story, follows the life of Marie Balter (Marlo Thomas), a young woman who has been institutionalized several times for various mental disorders. It seemed like everyone had given up on her, until a sympathetic doctor makes it a personal mission to nurture her back to health. After taking steps to wean herself off the powerful medications to which she was accustomed, she is finally able to start making progress with her life. She begins a rehabilitation program at the age of 36, shortly after being discharged from the mental hospital for the last time. In the care of a loving couple, she meets another patient with whom she forms a relationship. Eventually this turns romantic and in its wake she begins to pursue higher education. Following her graduation from college, she is able to begin her life as a doctor treating other patients with mental disorders.
