Nola is a 2003 film about a Kansas girl, Nola (Emmy Rossum), who flees a troubled home to seek a better life in New York City. She moves to New York hoping to become a songwriter, but also to search for her unknown father. While trying to get her feet on the ground, she lands a job at a local food joint. Nola quickly befriends her coworkers, including Ben (James Badge Dale), who is a law student that instantly finds her quite attractive. Nola soon discovers that her manager, Margaret (Mary McDonnell), owns a personal escort business and Nola accepts an offer to become her personal assistant. As Nola continues looking for her father, a legal battle breaks out when one of Margaret's girls upsets a frequent customer. Nola has to juggle between helping Margaret, having a relationship with Ben, and finding her father, while still adapting to the big city. Nola is an enchanting tale that entangles romance, drama, and comedy and will keep you entertained from start to finish.

New York Daily News Elizabeth Weitzman

So laughably preposterous that it's thoroughly entertaining.

A movie that pits a substantial actor like Mary McDonnell, playing a New York madam, against a bogus story that crossbreeds noirish affectations and romantic comedy into an unpalat...

Screwball elements feel overly theatrical -- one can almost see the actors waiting calmly in the wings for their breathless entrances.
