North Country is a dramatic film about a mother who sues the local mine where she works for sexual harassment. Josey Aimes (Charlize Theron) has just returned home to live with her parents after running away from an abusive husband. Now realizing she must make enough money to support her two children, she secures a job at a nearby mining company, with help from her good friend Glory, (Frances McDormand) who works there as well. While she knows she is stepping into a man's world, Aimes truly realizes just how severe the treatment of herself and other women at the mine is, as she endures lewd remarks, blatant mistreatment, and sexual attacks, all the while becoming the target of vicious fabricated rumors. Fed up with her treatment, she implores Bill White, (Woody Harrelson) a friend of Glory's, who is also a lawyer, to help her to sue the company. The lawsuit only worsens widespread public opinion of Aimes at the plant, who tries at White's behest to enlist the other women at the plant to testify, hoping to change the environment there once and for all. Niki Caro directs North County, which was inspired by the true story of Jenson vs. Eveleth Taconite Co., the first class action sexual harassment suit to be successful in changing workplace discrimination laws.moreless
