Not One Less is a 1999 Chinese comedic drama directed by Yimou Zhang and written by Xiangsheng Shi. Wei Minzhi (Minzhi Wei) is an impoverished 13-year-old girl living in rural China. She is ordered to be sent to an even more remote village that needs her to fill the role of substitute teacher while the only teacher is away. The catch is that she must keep the whole class together for an entire month, or she will not be paid. This is anxious news as Wei and her family are in severe financial debt, and success is her only option. When the class troublemaker skips town to work in the city, Wei is forced to follow him to avoid having one less student. No one in the city cares too much about Wei's situation, but she is determined to be heard. When a local news channel hears her plea, she finally gets a lead on her student.
