Novocaine is a 2001 comedy thriller from writer/director David Atkins about a well-meaning dentist who becomes tied up in a sordid affair of sex, drugs, and murder. Steve Martin plays Dr. Frank Sangster. Frank's life is simple and easy; he's engaged to a lovely dental hygienist, Jean (Laura Dern) and he operates a prosperous dental office. However, when the young and flirtatious Susan Ivey (Helena Bonham Carter) comes into his office and scams him for highly addictive pain killers, Frank is catapulted into a DEA investigation, a steamy affair with Susan, and a dangerous, adversarial relationship with Susan's brother, Duane (Scott Caan). As the situation spirals out of control, Frank is forced to leave his simple life behind as he finds himself on the wrong side of the law. Novocaine is a creative film full of dark humor and thrills as one everyman dentist gets trapped in a web of lies and lust.
