Nuts is a 1987 drama directed by Martin Ritt. Claudia (Barbra Streisand) enjoys her line of work, although many people find it controversial. She is a call girl who demands a high price for her services. One day, however, her work turns unexpectedly dangerous. Allen Green (Leslie Nielsen), one of Claudia's clients, starts to overstep his bounds. Desperate and panicking, Claudia fights back. When the dust settles, Allen is dead and Claudia is flung into the middle of a legal battle. Her mother, Rose (Maureen Stapleton), and her stepfather (Karl Malden) are determined to prove that Claudia is mentally unstable. Claudia, however, knows that she will be forced to stay in a psychiatric institution, losing her freedom and everything she loves about her life. Never one to back down from a challenge, Claudia reluctantly accepts the help of attorney Aaron Levinsky (Richard Dreyfuss). As Levinsky works with Claudia to prove her sanity and save her from the fate she dreads, he begins to uncover unsettling secrets about her past.
