October Sky is a fact-based drama about a young man from small town West Virginia, who wants to someday become a NASA scientist. Homer Hickam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a high-school science enthusiast inspired by the launch of the Sputnik Rocket. Homer's father John (Chris Cooper) is a coal miner who has aspirations of his two sons joining him in the mines some day. He is steadfastly against his son's dream of building rockets -- and Homer has no intention of spending the rest of his life languishing in a coal mine. With the help of his friends Quentin (Chris Owen), Roy Lee (William Lee Scott), and O'Dell (Chad Lindberg) he sets out to build his own rockets. He also has the support of his science teacher Miss Riley (Laura Dern). After several mishaps, he successfully launches several rockets. His entry in the national science fair is viewed as a ticket out of his small town. Even with success, Homer faces the daunting task of convincing his stubborn father that his dreams are worthwhile.moreless
