Of Human Bondage is the film adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's novel by the same name. Philip Carey (Leslie Howard) decides to leave his Paris art school and pursue an education in medicine. The sensitive student's work is decried as mediocre and that he lacks promise as an artist. When he returns to England and prepares to enter medical school, he meets Mildred Rogers (Bette Davis). He is smitten by the illiterate, slatternly and vulgar waitress who has no interest in him because of his club foot. He pursues her anyway, but she declines his proposal of marriage and runs off with a salesman. Philip tries hard to forget about Mildred and soon meets Norah (Kay Johnson). Just as he appears ready to move on from the cruel relationship, Mildred returns, pregnant and unmarried. Philip steps in to rescue her and leaves Norah. Mildred has learned little from her failed relationship. She is uninterested in being a mother and is still uninterested in being in a relationship with Philip. She disappears again, and Philip returns to his studies. She returns, broken-hearted from another failed relationship and appearing contrite about deserting him before. Philip must struggle to free himself from his bondage to the self-destructive Mildred. John Cromwell directs the 1934 film. It's considered the movie that launched Davis to stardom.moreless
