Of Mice and Men is the feature film adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic novel from 1937. The heartbreaking story follows George Milton (Gary Sinise) and Lennie Small (John Malkovich), two ranch hands wandering through depression era California. George is smart and cynical, Lennie is a mentally disabled man of immense size. Their mutual dream is to one day have their own piece of land. In one of the most memorable character traits from 20th century literature, Lennie's part of the dream is to "tend them rabbits," because of how much he loves touching the soft rabbit fur. The plot begins with the two fleeing a previous job where Lennie's habit of touching soft things gets them into trouble. They soon arrive at a ranch and begin to work. There they meet fellow ranch worker Candy (Ray Walston), the aggressive Curley (Casey Siemaszko), and Curley's Wife (Sherilyn Fenn), a beautiful young woman and object of Lennie's desire. Of Mice and Men was directed by Gary Sinise and nominated for the Golden Palm at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival.
