Off Screen is a 2005 Dutch action-thriller depicting the life of John Voerman (Jan Decleir) who is heavily convinced that television is being used by big business companies as a sort of mind-control device to influence the public in order to make a financial gain. The film depicts his bizarre and rash decision to arm himself and take 18 hostages in a massive Amsterdam skyscraper in order to attract attention to what he sees as his noble fight against the wide-scale conspiracy to manipulate consumers across the world. Off Screen provides an in-depth look into the confused and tortured psyche of John Voerman as well as the complex relationship that develops between him and television big-shot Gerard Wesselinck (Jeroen Krabbe). Most of the film's riveting drama and ability to hook the audience comes from Voerman's efforts to use his hostages as leverage to make Wesselinick admit his alleged scheme to the world. The film is heavily based off of actual events.moreless
