PG-13
O'Horten is a 2007 comedic drama about a dull train driver who is preparing to retire from his job. After forty years on the job, Odd Horten (Bard Owe) has decided to stop working. On the night before his last day of work O'Horten attends a farewell party. Through a series of comic misadventures, O'Horten finds himself locked out of his own party and ends up falling asleep in the bedroom of a young boy. The next morning, O'Horten wakes up to discover that he has overslept and missed his last day of work. No longer having a job, O'Horten decides to go on an adventure. He visits his mother in a retirement home, but leaves after becoming depressed by her senility. He ultimately meets a man his own age named Trygve Sissener (Espend Skjonberg). Unlike O'Horten, Sissener is a free-spirit and, through the influence of his new friend, O'Horten finally decides to stop being so cautious and start embracing life.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

This is a gentle comedy, both funny and melancholy, about a timid soul who discovers the necessity of embracing life in all its absurdity and unlooked-for joy.

  • 80

    Variety

On screen non-stop, Owe is Buster Keaton-like perfection.

  • 70

The New York Times A.O. Scott

O'Horten is about frustration, patience, kindness and the wildness that lurks in even the calmest hearts. What's odd about that?
