Old Yeller is a 1957 classic drama directed by Robert Stevenson. Set in Texas just after the civil war, the film begins with Jim Coates (Fess Parker) leaving his wife Katie (Dorothy McGuire), and two sons, Travis (Tommy Kirk) and Arlis (Kevin Corcoran), behind to go on a cattle drive. Soon after he leaves, Travis comes across Old Yeller, a labrador retriever mutt, while working in a cornfield. While Travis tries to shoo the dog away, his younger brother Arlis, likes him. One day, when Arlis is trying to catch a baby bear using corn bread as bait, the bear's mother attacks him. Old Yeller steps in and saves him, thereby endearing him to the family. Travis and Old Yeller are soon fast friends. When rabies begins to infect the local animals, however, Old Yeller finds himself defending the family against a stricken wolf. Before Travis can kill the wolf, it savagely attacks Old Yeller. Now Travis must face the ultimate test of his young life when he learns that Old Yeller has the disease.moreless
