Charles Dickens' immortal story of Oliver Twist is well-known and deeply loved. Oliver (John Howard Davies) is an orphan who runs away from the workhouse and the bullying Mr Bumble (Francis L Sullivan). Homeless and hungry, he meets the Artful Dodger (Anthony Newley) who brings him to the attention of Fagin (Alec Guinness), the mastermind behind a gang of young thieves. The Artful Dodger is nearly caught picking the pocket of Mr Brownlow (Henry Stephenson) but escapes. Oliver is accused of the crime and later, acquitted, Mr Brownlow takes him home where for the first time, he is shown love and security. Fagin is anxious that the boy may reveal the whereabouts of his secret den of thieves so his associate, Bill Sikes (Robert Newton), finds Oliver and forces him back into Fagin's clutches. Sikes' girlfriend, Nancy (Kay Walsh), is horrified and betrays the villains to the police. Sikes kills Nancy, but whilst trying to escape, dies in a rooftop fall. Fagin is captured and Oliver is rescued and returned to Mr Brownlow. David Lean's version of this immortal classic is a superb example of motion picture art and is one of the finest screen translations of a literary classic ever made.moreless
