Oliver! is a 1968 musical adaptation of the classic novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. After young orphan Oliver Twist (Mark Lester) asks for more food at dinner, Mr. Bumble (Harry Secombe), the manager of his workhouse, is enraged. Mr. Bumble sends Oliver away to be an apprentice to an undertaker, but Oliver soon escapes and makes his way to London. Once he arrives, he meets a boy nicknamed The Artful Dodger (Jack Wild), a pickpocket who introduces Oliver to his criminal profession. Soon, Fagin (Ron Moody) and his henchman Bill Sikes (Oliver Reed) decide to employ Oliver as one of their pickpockets. However, Oliver is caught trying to steal kind Mr. Brownlow's (Joseph O'Conor) wallet and put on trial as a thief. Mr. Brownlow believes that Oliver is innocent and feels sympathy for the boy, so he decides to raise Oliver as his own son. Although Oliver finally thinks that he will have a permanent home of his own, Fagin and Sikes decide that they will do anything necessary to get him back.moreless
