Omkara is Vishal Bhardwaj's award-winning 2006 adaptation of the William Shakespeare play Othello. Advocate Raghunath (Kamal Tiwari) arranges for his daughter, Dolly (Kareena Kapoor) to marry, despite the knowledge that she is in love with Omkara (Ajay Devgan), gang leader and political enforcer. As a result, Omkara "abducts" Dolly, sending Raghunath after his daughter. It quickly becomes clear, however, that the two had eloped, and his daughter was not taken forcefully. Omkara is then convinced to run for political office, and must appoint a replacement as the leader of his gang. When he names Kesu (Vivek Oberoi) as his replacement, his other lieutenant, Langda (Saif Ali Khan), feels betrayed by Omkara's lack of judgment and plots his revenge. Nominated for twenty-six awards and winner of twelve, including three Indian National Film Awards and the Asian Film First Festival award for Best Cinematographer, director Vishal Bhardwaj brings a unique spin to Shakespeare's epic tragedy.
