On the Edge is a 1986 sports drama about a middle-aged runner taking a last chance at a dream. Wes Holman (Bruce Dern) loves nothing more than running, but he has been banned from amateur competitions for over 20 years. At the time, he wanted to expose the practice of undercover payment to athletes which unfairly gave advantages to some runners. Encouraged by his union organizer father, Flash (Bill Bailey), he brought attention to the issue but was then kept out of the league. Now, he wants to compete in the Cielo-Sea Race in the 40-plus category even though he is not allowed to officially enter the race. The race takes runners on a grueling route in Northern California over trails and mountains, but the competitors can choose their own path. Holman will run the race even though he cannot win the title. He asks his old coach, Elmo (John Marley) to help him train. As Holman gets back into top shape, he grapples with his memories and years of bitterness.
