On the Edge is a 2001 drama from Irish director John Carney. After 19-year-old Jonathan Breech (Cillian Murphy) attends the funeral of his alcoholic father, he becomes deeply depressed. Determined to end his life, Jonathan steals a convertible, places his father's urn inside of it, and drives off a cliff. When he fails to kill himself, Jonathan decides to go to a mental institution rather than go to jail for wrecking the stolen car. At first, Jonathan becomes even more depressed when he is forced to live in the dreary institution. However, he soon forms a romantic attachment to Rachel (Tricia Vessey), a strange girl he meets during a group therapy session led by Dr. Figure (Stephen Rea). Rachel achieves pleasure from pain, and Jonathan is both repulsed and intrigued by her antics. As Jonathan slowly falls in love with her, he soon discovers that Toby (Jonathan Jackson), another suicidal patient, is seeking Rachel's heart as well.
