On the Line

Movie Summary

Eric Bross
On the Line is a classic story of teen love and near romance, a comedy featuring the stars of boy band N Sync. A young advertising employee just getting started in life, Kevin Gibbons (Lance Bass), has a chance encounter on a train. He encounters the woman he thinks to be the one of his dreams, Abbey (Emmanuelle Chriqui). He spends the rest of the film trying to track Abbey down. Kevin's close friend and confidant Rod (Joey Fatone) promises to help him on his journey of love and adventure. The whole escapade seems hopeless because clueless Kevin forgot to do the one thing he needed to do: get her phone number before she got away. Now they're loose in Chicago with little more than a hope and a prayer. They put up posters all over town, and Kevin ends up on a few dates with strangers, only to discover that they're not the girl for whom he's searching. A local newspaper runs the story and then Kevin is flooded with dates, which his friends are more than happy to go on for him.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 60

The New York Times Stephen Holden

Once you've accepted the notion that On the Line gives product placement in movies a blatant new prominence, the film turns out to be a soothing cinematic snack of milk and cookies.

  • 60

    Variety Joe Leydon

Perfectly harmless, often humorous, featherweight confection -- think "Serendipity" re-imagined as a teen-skewing Saturday morning sitcom.

  • 40

    Los Angeles Times Gene Seymour

Sophisticated romantic comedy for people who think "Corky Romano" is trenchant political satire.
