On the Ropes is a 1999 documentary film about three troubled young boxer's fighting their way out of the ghettos of urban New York. Directed by Nanette Burstein and Brett Morgen, The film more closely follows the struggles of Tyrene Manson, Noel Santiago, and George Walton as they train hard at the Bed-Stuy Boxing Center. As the film progresses you begin to empathize with the young athletes as they slowly but surely rise above their difficult circumstances and achieve a righteously earned sense of hope and accomplishment. Tyrene is particularly compelling because she is a young woman that took up boxing after finding out that amateur boxing officials had sanctioned women's boxing. The film is a series of ups and downs, following these characters as they push against drug addictions, violence, and their surroundings in a rollercoaster ride between prison bars and the vinyl ropes of the ring. Just about ninety-four minutes long, this documentary is truly and inspiration to all.moreless
