On the Threshold of Space is a 1956 historical drama that depicts one of America's first attempts to explore the universe. The film focuses on an Air Force doctor, Hugh Thornton (Dean Jagger), who conducts a series of tests to learn how the human body will respond to the different forces of space travel. The experiments are conducted at Air Proving Grounds Command at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. The tests includes getting ejected from a B-47 Stratojet bomber at an altitude of 10,000 feet at varying speeds. Another test includes getting ejected from a space capsule fully accelerated to a thousand miles per hour at an altitude of 45,000 feet, and stratospheric free-fall jumping from a balloon at 100,000 feet above sea level and releasing the pilot's specially designed parachutes a few thousand feet before landing on the ground. On the Threshold of Space is an honorary film for all the crews and researchers of US Air Force that paved the way for the United States' various space explorations efforts.moreless
