On the Yard is a 1978 dramatic film directed by Raphael D. Silver and based on the novel with the same name written by Malcolm Braly. It tells the story of a conflict that takes place inside a prison between an influential gang leader and an unusual convict who dares to test the long-established social system that dominates the life behind bars. Chilly (Thomas Waites) is a powerful convict leader who controls the black market of cigarettes inside the prison walls. Although correctional officer Captain Blake (Lane Smith) tries hard to destroy Chilly's business and discover the path of tobacco inside the prison, the tough gangster seems to be always one step ahead of prison guards. When disobedient and daring convict Juleson (John Heard) has the guts to challenge Chilly's authority and power, he will pay the price for disrespecting the unofficial rules of the game behind prison bars, being forced to deal with the rough consequences.
