Once Upon A Time In China is a 1991 Hong Kong historical action film starring Jet Li as Wong Fei-hung, a Chinese folk hero known for his incredible martial arts skill and his relentless upholding of traditional Chinese values. The film takes place in the province of Fat-san, where shifting political powers and the growing influence of the Western world are causing great tension. The film begins with General Lau Wing-fuk recruiting Wong to help him assemble and train a civilian militia of martial artists. While doing so, he meets the lovely Siu-kwan, a woman he falls for but has trouble formally pursuing because of complications between their families. Conflict arises when a terrorist organization called the Shaho Gang join forces with the Americans in a brutal slave trading operation in return for the American's protection from the Chinese government. With the Chinese government unable to help, it's up to Wong and his followers to defeat the Americans and the Shaho Gang. Once Upon A Time In China is a revered martial arts classic and one of Jet Li's breakout performances.moreless
