Once Upon a Wheel is a television documentary made in 1971. Starring Paul Newman, this piece focused on the history of auto racing. Directed and produced by David Winters, Paul Newman narrated this film that featured cars and tracks from the early 1970s. The documentary featured appearances by Dean Martin, Cesar Romero, Dick Smothers, Mario Andretti, and many more. The Houston Post called this film the "Woodstock of racing". The piece features the history of man and machine in the racing world. This film was touted to have an almost poetic effect with the roar of the engines, the danger, and the fame, which was part of the world of racecar driving. This film takes a nostalgic look back into the racing world just as it was coming into its own. Racing greats, like Mario Andretti, Parnelli Jones, Al and Bobbi Unser, Bobby Isaac, and Richard Petty, were in their prime and capturing the hearts of racing fans. This documentary looks at the struggles they went through to conquer the speed, screeching tires, roaring engines, and the tight turns at speeds up to 200 miles an hour or more. Monterey Media re-released this film in 2004.moreless
