One Bright Shining Moment is a 2005 political documentary that chronicles presidential candidate George McGovern's amazing run towards the presidency during the 1972 election. McGovern, a democratic senator from South Dakota, achieved the seemingly impossible by defeating party favorites Hubert Humphrey and Edmund Muskie to win the Democratic nomination for the presidency that year. As documented in the film, what made McGovern's nomination so surprising is the fact that a large group of old school liberals and young people disenchanted with the war in Vietnam were among his biggest supporters. Though he ended up losing to incumbent Richard Nixon in the presidential election, his words energized new and progressive Americans to a level that had never been seen before. McGovern's campaign is today remembered as one of the few triumphs that came from the will of the people and not political positioning. Director Stephen Vittora uses archival interviews with historian Howard Zinn and McGovern himself to explain how the democrat changed the political landscape.moreless
