One False Move is a 1992 cat-and-mouse crime drama about three violent drug dealers headed to a small town after a cross-country series of killings. Pluto (Michael Beach) is the calm leader of the group, Ray (Billy Bob Thorton) is a pony-tailed biker type and Fantasia (Cynda Williams) is Ray's girlfriend. Before the gang heads to Houston to unload their drugs, they plan to stop in the small town of Star City, Texas to see Fantasia's family. Unknown to the gang, however, there are three cops awaiting their arrival. Two are Los Angeles police officers (Jim Metzler and Earl Billings) and one is the local sheriff of Star City, Dale "Hurricane" Dixon (Bill Paxton). The two L.A. cops treat Hurricane like a hayseed but underneath his simple exterior, there is more his character than they imagine. This thriller was the first film directed by Carl Franklin, and was written by Tom Epperson and co-star Billy Bob Thorton.

The dialogue and action in One False Move seems instinctive and unforced. There isn't an iota of caricature, there isn't an affectation of "style," there isn't a false note sounded.
