Movie Summary

Michael O. Sajbel
One Night with the King is a 2006 historical drama that loosely follows the Old Testament legend of Esther. An orphan of stunning beauty, Hadassah (Tiffany Dupont) is adored by her doting Uncle Mordecai (John Rhys-Davies), a trusted scribe of Xerxes (Luke Goss), the king of Persia. Under Mordecai's tutelage, Hadassah has become well versed in literature and religion. When Xerxes spurns his queen and decrees that all eligible young women must join his harem, Mordecai renames Hadassah in an effort to conceal her Jewish identity, calling her Esther. Appreciating Esther's intelligence and beauty, Xerxes eventually chooses her as his new queen. The new queen's palace isn't a placid one, though. Hamen (James Callis) is plotting to avenge the death of his people, who were annihilated by the Jews. Through a series of betrayals, he gains Xerxes' trust and proceeds with a sinister plot to eradicate the Jews. Esther refuses to deny her Jewish heritage and saves her people from certain destruction.moreless

This preposterous adaptation of the Book of Esther is recommended viewing only for those impressed that it comes endorsed by the American Bible Society.
