One too Many, Killer with a Label, Mixed-up Women, or the more obvious, The Important Story of Alcoholism are all titles for one film centered around the dangers of excessive drinking. The film was released during a topical time - alcohol consumption saw a steep rise in popularity during the 1950's. Written by Kroger Babb and directed by Erle C. Kenton, One too Many illustrates its message through the story of Helen Mason (Ruth Warrick), a concert pianist with an addiction to alcohol. The film documents the ways in which alcohol ruins Mason's life at home and as a pianist. After hitting rock bottom, she admits herself to a rehabilitation center and support group - Alcoholics Anonymous. When the film was originally shown in the theaters in 1950, it was paired with a lecture by an expert on alcoholism who warned viewers of the dangers of mid-morning cocktails. Additional cast includes Richard Travis, Rhys Williams, and William Tracy. One too Many is inarguably Kroger Babb's greatest film. Be sure to watch this film, just skip the six pack this time.moreless
