One True Thing is a an American melodrama based on a book of the same title by Anna Quindlen. The novel was adapted to screen by Karen Croner. Carl Franklin (Devil in a Blue Dress) directs. Ellen Gulden (Renee Zellweger) is happy with where she is in life - inn her late twenties she is dating the perfect guy, and has a promising in journalism. But all of that is compromised when she unexpectedly learns her mother Kate (Meryl Streep) has fallen ill with cancer. Her father George (William Hurt) urges she come home and care for her mother. At first, Ellen is hesitant, but upon realizing it's for the best, she quits her job, breaks off her relationship with her boyfriend, and moves into her parents' house. As she reconnects with family, she unveils several dark secrets surrounding her father's life - it appears as though George has not always been faithful to his dying wife. Does Ellen have the heart to tell her mother about her husband's infidelity? This 1998 film will induce deep thought and tears. Two thumbs up!moreless
