Operation Amsterdam is a 1959 war drama directed by Michael McCarthy. Based on a true story, the film follows three British agents sent to Holland aboard the HMS Walpole to steal industrial diamonds from Dutch banks before the Nazis arrive. The team consists of two Dutch diamond experts, Jan Smit (Peter Finch) and Walter Keyser (Alexander Knox), and a British intelligence officer, Major Dillon (Tony Britton). When the trio arrive in Holland, they find themselves dodging German bombs and Dutch authorities. They commandeer a car driven by a suicidal Dutch woman, Anna (Eva Bartok), and force her to drive them to Amsterdam. When they arrives, Jan meets up with his father Johan Smit (Malcolm Keen) who is also a diamond dealer. Johan agrees to convince the other dealers to turn their diamonds over to the team for safekeeping in Britain. With the Germans approaching and the Dutch police on hot on their trail, it's a race against time to see if they will escape Holland with the diamonds before the war begins. Fans of World War II dramas and spy movies alike will find something to enjoy in this real-life action adventure.moreless
