Operation Thunderbolt is a 1977 Israeli film based on the real life rescue of hostages trapped at the Entebbe Airport in Kampala, Uganda on July 4, 1976. When four terrorists hijacked an Air France flight from Tel Aviv to Paris, they force the pilot to land in Entebbe at the invitation of the Ugandian leader Idi Amin (Mark Heath). They are joined by more Palestinian terrorists and hold the Jewish passengers hostage in demand for the release of terrorists held in Israeli prisons. After much deliberating, the Israeli government then sends an elite team of military specialist, under the command of Colonel Yonatan Netanyahu (Yehoram Gaon), to free the hostages. The film follows the events from the initial takeoff of the flight through the rescue of the hostages and their return to Israel. Featuring Klaus Kinski and Sybil Danning as the two West German terrorists, Operation Thunderbolt was highly acclaimed around the world, and was nominated in 1978 for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.moreless
